Persistent Characters for OGRE/GEV

If a Unit achieves a KILL (X Result) on another unit, or eliminates a Main Weapon System from an OGRE (MB, 2B, or MSL), then the Player controlling that Unit may add a Kill Token to that unit, indicating its success.

At the end of a skirmish, any unit that survives with one or more Kill Tokens, may roll for a Promotion in Rank. The owning player rolls a number of dice equal to the total Kills that character has MINUS that character's current rank. Therefore a character of Rank 0 (Private), who achieved 1 Kill, would only roll 1 die. Whereas, that same Private who's achieved 4 Kills, would roll 4 dice. If any of the dice on the Promotion Roll show a 6 - then that character is promoted, and moves up 1 Rank. Another character, who had already reached the Rank of 4 (Captain), and had accumulated 6 Kills over its career, would only roll 2 dice for its next promotion roll. (6 Kills - 4 Rank = 2 Dice)

If the Unit receives a promotion (or the controlling player wants to keep a record of that unit's kills), then that player should fill out a Unit Card for that unit, noting the:

Unit Type:
Unit Name:
Call-Sign:
Affiliation:
Rank:
Kills:

Ranks:
0: Private
1: Corporal
2: Sergeant
3: Lieutenant
4: Captain
5: Major
6: Colonel
6+: General

A Unit with Rank, will receive at the beginning of a skirmish, a number of Rank Tokens equal to that unit's Rank. These Tokens may be spent, in order to add a +1 to either a die roll, or attribute in that unit's die rolls, in which it participates. If the player chose the Move attribute in which to increase for that Rank Token, then the entire stack would benefit from that increase, if the stack stayed cohesive for the entire Move. Only one Rank Token may be used per die roll or attribute, per turn. The bonuses gained from the expenditure of a Rank Tokens do not last longer than the turn on which they're spent. Each Rank increases that units Victory Point Value by +1. Therefore, a GEV or HVY with the Rank of General(6), would have 6 Rank Tokens, and be worth 12VP.

I feel this addition would increase the RPG value of the game, and give campaigns more "flavor", in which certain units were to bring their "history" to the battlefield. I also feel that the Rank Tokens add enough benefit to be worth tracking, but not so much that they break the game.

Let me know what you think.
